CURRICULUM
Mathematics, English and Science form the core
curriculum in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum. The
teaching in Mathematics establishes fundamental skills in numeracy and the
application of those skills in a range of contexts. Mental arithmetic is
developed continuously as are the skills required for solving problems
particularly through practical exercises.
English
In English, close attention is given to reading and
writing. From an early age, pupils are encouraged to enjoy a range of books
and individual reading sessions form a regular part of learning. Writing
skills are developed for a range of purposes; handwriting and presentation
are reinforced across the core curriculum.
Science
Practical tasks are used to develop individual
learning and investigative skills in Science. Facilities designed and
equipped specifically for Science teaching, enable pupils to enjoy a variety
of tasks. In addition to the core curriculum, pupils are taught History,
Geography, IT, French, Art, Music and P.E.. Teaching in these subjects
extends core skills and encourages self-expression and enquiry.
French
All pupils in the school receive French Tuition on a weekly basis. The aim is
to give a basic vocabulary for everyday situations and the confidence to
speak French. The programme consists of informal songs and stories for
younger pupils, combined with simple written exercises as pupils progress
through the school. A weekly Spoken French Group is available as an
extra-curricular activity; in a more formal context, pupils participate in
complementary activities to practise conversational skills.
Music
Throughout the school, pupils enjoy a variety of music. Singing is taught to
all pupils and older children also take lessons using a variety of
instruments. There are several opportunities for pupils to participate in
whole school or group musical events. Extra-curricular music includes
individual lessons and the school choir.
Spoken English
Recognising the need for clear and confident speaking, the school offers
classes in Spoken English on an extra-curricular basis. Pupils enjoy
performing a wide range of poems and stories and many have achieved success
in examination with the English Speaking Board and the Bedfordshire Festival.
Sports
The School provides a varied curriculum of both indoor and outdoor physical
activities. Football, hockey and more informal P.E. are weekly activities,
with athletics in the summer term. Pupils also participate in swimming, gym
and dancing all of which are taught by specialist staff. All pupils are
encouraged to gain nationally recognised progress awards in swimming and
gymnastics.
Special Needs
Any child may at some time require additional teaching support for a variety
of reasons and the school is well placed to identify and rapidly respond to
such requirements. The school has a Special Needs Co-ordinator who is
professionally trained to identify the most appropriate teaching strategies
and to consult with parents.
Beyond the Curriculum The activities of the
school reach beyond the academic; children are given the opportunity to
develop individual interests through school clubs and extra-curricular
classes. Throughout the year, pupils enjoy a range of school trips many of
which compliment themes covered in class.
The combination of academic and social
activities provides a learning experience which is stimulating and rewarding,
enabling a child to grow as an individual and as part of the community.
